Myanmar (Birmanie) - Mandalay et ses environs

L'ancienne capitale / The old capital

Nous apprecions le retour dans une grande ville, Mandalay nous apparait meme plus riche et plus developpee que Yangon. Mais c'est peut etre simplement par contraste avec ce que l'on vient de voir...
Nous y passons 3 jours a visiter la ville et les anciennes citees de Mingun, Pyin U Lwin (Maymyo) et Amarapura.
Mingun est un temple inacheve, qui aurait du mesurer plus de 150m de haut si son commanditaire n'etait pas decede en cours des travaux. Seul le socle est en fait termine et, apres plusieurs trembelments de terre, constitue aujourd'hui le plus grand tas de briques du monde !
A Pyin U Lwin, nous avons ete un peu decu, car il y a peu a voir de cette ville de residence d'ete des colons britaniques, hormis un superbe jardin botanique ou nous avons passe l'apres-midi.
Pour amarapura, nous avons loue des velos, nous nous sommes bien sur perdus, mais cela nous a permi de sillonner la campagne, aussi interessante pour nous que les vestiges des temples. Un edifice vaut tout de meme le detour : un pont en teck de 1.2km, construit il y a 2 siecles et dont certains piliers sont encore d'origine.

Lors de la visitede Mingun, nous faisons la connaissance d'un couple de Francais, Delphine et Thierry, partis depuis novembre 2005 pour un voyage de 8 mois sur un itineraire proche du notre. Experimentes apres 2 mois de voyage, ils nous font part de leurs bons plans et notamment de ce blog. On en profite pour se faire un bon restau ensemble, et meme le luxe d'une biere locale (ma premiere goutte d'alcool depuis notre arrivee au Myanmar, ca a du bon les voyages !)

It's nice to be back in a big city and Mandalay seems wealthier than Yangon. We visited the palace which was rebuilt and is not as nice as it was supposed to be before its destruction. We also went to a few temples and climbed Mandalay hill situated at the North of the city. It gives a global view on Mandalay, especially nice at sunset.

From Mandalay we took a boat to Mingun, a temple that was never finished but which would have been the highest in the world. It is now just a big pile of bricks but the size is impressive

Around Mandalay there are several ancient cities to visit. We went to one called Amarapura. To get there we went on our own on rented bicycles. We gost lost in the countryside and went much further than necessary. Thankfully the scenery was nice and it was worth the detour.
It just took us a bit longer than normal but we got there in the end. There are a few old temples and the longest teak wood bridge in the world.

We also spent a day in Pyin U Lwin, an ancient colonial city about 2 hours away from Mandalay, but we were a bit disappointed. We walked around in the city but there wasn't that much to see. Most of the interesting things to see around were not in the city and we would have needed more time and a motorized mean of transport. So instead we rented a bike and went to the botanical garden.
